Jesus, talking to his disciples and the crowd in the Sermon on the Mount said...
““You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men. “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:13–16, NASB95)
Yes, Jesus said if the salt has lost it’s savour it’s not good for anything. Mr. Bill never did lose his! “Light” and “Salt”--good words for Mr. Bill. “Good works” describe him too! “Glorifying the Father.”
That’s what we heard from every quarter yesterday, around services, fellowship, and food--a day of honoring Bill and thanking God for a “life well lived.” Struggles to be sure. But an overcomer to be sure!
Bill and Valerie were among the founders of City Christian Fellowship, more than twenty years ago. The verse above was our mission statement and mantra. No one lived it better than Mr. Bill. His love and example exhort us to this high calling once more. Don’t curse the darkness, light a candle, and keep shinning--serving, loving. Your opportunities will be over sooner than you think.
Indeed a mighty one has fallen. But in a winning cause. His race is run. His victory won. He stands in the Presence of the King, the LORD of all.
